Some symbols are counter-intuitive

Example:

I understand the logic but the symbol and language for "before previous" are not intuitive. Some interpretations of this > are as an arrow pointing to the letter to the right, so the symbol is not enough without the language. Perhaps a mini representation of the necessary context? (Tile to left with an up arrow on it, and this (central) tile with down arrow on it).
